Nautical Bathroom Rugs

Nautical Bathroom Rugs

Statement Rugs

Interior designers often remind us not to overlook what's beneath our feet when we decorate a room. The flooring you choose has powerful impact, particularly if you are following the current trend of laying down bold, interesting statement rugs to give a space a spark of life.

You've heard of statement jewelry? Maybe you even wear a chunky bauble to dress up your T-shirts and cardigan sets. A statement rug performs the same accessorizing task in a room: It elevates the basic to something special. A statement rug should change the feel of a space and push it past a prescribed look. You can give a traditional room a mod vibe by adding a wooly shag to the floor, for example. With its pink walls and feminine flounces on the chairs, this dining room could feel girly and trite. But the exotic black-and-white pattern of the rug is an unexpectedly eclectic touch, it and gives the space a worldly edge.

Style Notes

living room

It doesn't have to be large or sparkly, but a statement rug should have presence -- an unusual color combination, a striking pattern, or an interesting texture. You already have other elements in the space, such as upholstery, window treatments, and artwork, so the rug has to claim its own portion of attention. In this living room, there is a lot of color and pattern happening at once. Yet the statement rug still stands out. Its vintage feel and bright colors pop off the large neutral rug underneath, and the long fringe is a silky counterpoint to the rough sisal.

How to Use Statement Rugs in Your Home

Perfectly Balanced

Layer a rug of unusual shape over a standard rug to add a component of visual interest. Try it under a seating group where you can overlap an amorphous shape, such as a faux-animal skin, over a typical rectangle. It makes a room feel comfortably aged over time.

When color and pattern is limited, such as in a utilitarian kitchen or formal dining room, unroll a powerfully bold pattern, such as wide awning stripes or a boisterous floral, to enliven the space. New cabinet hardware or bright dishware might follow.

How High Should Bathroom Tile Go Up On Wall

How High Should Bathroom Tile Go Up On Wall

Classic Cast-Iron Tubs

Thayer Allyson Gowdy

I live in a mobile home built around 1970, so there are about three layers of wallpaper in the bathroom. Once I got to the actual base, I realized that it wasn't paneling like the rest of the home. I'm not even really sure what it is -- it has a really grainy texture, almost like plywood. And now I have no idea what to do with it! All I know is that I don't want wallpaper. Please help!

Jennifer Muri

Dear Jennifer,
It sounds like the best solution to the grainy, plywood-textured walls in your bathroom is to cover them up, which is what the previous homeowners tried to do -- by wallpapering over them.

You'd be surprised at the number of good options that are on the market today for paneling. It's not the faux wood paneling of yesterday -- today, manufacturers can simulate almost anything using the latest technology. For example, if you prefer a tiled look, check out Georgia-Pacific's Lionite tileboard. These 4' x 8' boards have a baked-on, water-resistant melamine finish -- perfect for the bathroom. They are offered in a number of colors and textures and are available at most home improvement centers, including Home Depot (homedepot.com) and Lowe's (lowes.com). Georgia-Pacific also offers one of my favorite "quick fixes" -- Ply-Bead Panels. These 4' x 8' panels are made of durable southern pine and come in 1.6" beaded board. All you need to do is give them a coat of paint. Beaded board is a great look and, installed floor to ceiling, would cover your old plywood easily. Check out Georgia-Pacific's Website at www.gp.com. It offers great tips, product specs and installation guidelines that you might find helpful in your decision-making process.

Another option, which I also like, is the paintable textures from Graham & Brown. I know you said you didn't want wallpaper, but this is different. It is a prepasted product that is easy to install and has texture and pattern. Best of all, it's paintable, so you're not committed to one look -- you can change it to match your towels from season to season. It comes in a number of great patterns that would be appropriate for the bathroom. I like the "Linen" textured wallcovering. It would conceal your blemished wall, yet add a soft texture and a spalike feel to your space. These wall coverings are available at Home Depot, The Great Indoors (www.thegreatindoors.com) and Menards (www.menards.com), or you can call (800) 554-0887 to get more information about the product. The paper costs about $13 to $15 per 11-yard roll and is 20.5" wide.

Good luck with your project!

Jennifer

How did you finish the countertop next to the sink? I can't imagine a wood bathroom counter – but it's so beautiful! much better than what you usually find.

I like hickory a lot. I've done many kitchens in hickory.

Really nice vanity. I think the column looking drawers are a good touch.

I've always loved hickory, and thought kitchen cabinets were a great way to display the wood. I never gave a minute's thought of doing a bathroom in hickory. Thanks for showing the way – awesome job!!!!

-- I've never seen a tree that I wouldn't like to repurpose into a project. I love the smell of wood in the morning - it smells like victory.

Have your say...

Guide To Traditional Bathroom Furniture

We sell a wide range of traditional bathroom furniture. Leading manufacturers head up our offering such as Imperial Bathrooms, Burlington, and Roper Rhodes. Get in touch for quotes on traditional fitted furniture by Roper Rhodes and Noble.

Furniture for Victorian Plumbing

In the UK many of us have older Victorian properties. These can still have traditional plumbing systems such as large vertical waste soil pipes and lower water pressures. There are options available to accommodate these issues. Waste pipes can be covered.  A number of brands offer pipe covers in finishes that match their traditional bathroom furniture ranges. Cisterns can be built into WC furniture units. Soil pipe connections can be connected via a concealed soil pipe adaptor.

Imperial Bathrooms - An Experienced UK Brand

Imperial Bathrooms are based in the midlands. They have a dedicated wood workshop where a specialist team of woodworkers handcraft and perfect each item of furniture.  Years of experience, quality control and research has honed some of the finest British handmade furniture on the market today.

Every item is handmade to order so some finishes can take a little longer. However, if you're planning your dream bathroom you'll be doing so in advance anyway. Placing your order a few weeks in advance will allow you and your fitters to plan a schedule of works. When your furniture arrives fresh from the wood factory you'll be ready to install it straight away.

Imperial don't just offer natural solid wooden finishes. You can also order hand painted units in classic paint colours.  Their furniture has been specially developed for use in bathrooms. Theie paint finishes will remain looking great for years to come.

Traditional, Country Cottage Bathrooms

The traditional country cottage look is very popular. To achieve this softer warmer look we would recommend selecting warm natural colours and textures such as natural oak. Certain manufacturers will produce warmer colours of ceramic such as ivory. For example the Burlington Medici range of ceramics can add warmth to the room. However, white porcelain can look just as lovely. Particularly alongside gold fittings and accessories to warm up the design scheme.

Your bathroom furniture helps to create the Victorian Cottage look. Opt for doors that have a panelling effect and period detailing on the handles. A stunning example of this style is the Imperial Thurlestone range. These sumptuous vanity units have generous proportions, detail on the solid handles and beautiful, real natural oak construction. The feet are curved in design adding decorative detail to the base of the unit.

We can supply all Imperial Bathrooms items as in the video above. Contact us for more information on any product by Imperial.
